Be a part of this inspiring event honoring the spirit, hope and drive of the mitochondrial disease community.
Hope Flies® Mile Climb for Mito is a family-friendly event supported by an inspired community of volunteers, donors and friends honoring the mitochondrial and related disease community while raising money for mitochondrial disease treatment and research on behalf of the Foundation for Mitochondrial Medicine, a non-profit organization based in Atlanta.
Hope Flies Mile Climb for Mito was created by Atlanta firefighter Kato Baythavong in memory of his precious daughter, Kirra, who passed away from Leigh’s Disease, a fatal form of mitochondrial disease. More than 100 firefighters dressed in full gear will lead the climb, along with their families, friends and supporters.
When you join the Hope Flies® Mile Climb for Mito community, whether it be as a walker, volunteer, donor, sponsor or cheerleader, you bring hope to those facing a rare or chronic illness. Thank you for helping Hope Fly!
Ages 5 – 18; children under age 5 are free. Event rain/shine, therefore refunds are not provided.
Mitochondrial diseases are complicated. They affect 1 in 2500 people, are more common in children than cancer, yet so much remains unknown and treatments scarce.
Mitochondrial Disease inhibits the body’s ability to adequately produce energy. This energy production problem can have significant effects on major systems like heart, muscle and brain. Research shows links between mitochondrial disease and a variety of diseases, including Autism, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s (ALS), muscular dystrophies and chronic fatigue syndrome.
The Foundation for Mitochondrial Medicine and Hope Flies Mile Climb for Mito in Memory of Kirra support patient programs, including awareness, patient and clinician education and treatment-oriented research. Please join us at Hope Flies Mile Climb and help unlock the mysteries of mitochondrial disease.
